A Dysphagia Systems Test (DST) evaluates the five systems required for safe swallowing: Muscular, Neurological, Respiratory, Gastrointestinal, and Cognitive. The specificity of our evaluation technique results in the establishment of realistic goals, functional management, and improved patient outcomes.
As the healthcare environment continues to evolve, the importance of functional dysphagia management and thorough documentation of medical necessity is clear. A research based, outcome-driven service for guiding facilities in managing their patient’s dysphagia is of both clinical and operational value. As such, we re-modeled the on-site dysphagia evaluation and instrumentation to meet both the facilities’ and patient’s needs. The result is the Dysphagia Systems Test (DST), an evaluation of the five-systems required for safe swallowing; Muscular, Neurological, Respiratory, Gastrointestinal, and Cognitive.
The DST evaluates the function of each system individually, and establishes the patient’s risk of complications from the dysphagia as a whole. Including the fiberoptic endoscopic swallowing test (FEES), the baseline of functional abilities and recommendations are documented on the DST. Utilizing a 7-point scale, the DST qualifies the patient’s condition and projected goal status to assist the Facility SLP in establishing ongoing goals to comply with required reporting standards. The DST documentation design allows for functional tracking of patient outcomes and integration into facility data systems.
